DEMANDA DE ZANTAC (RANITIDINA

Qué es Zantac y Ranitidina?Durante casi 20 años, Zantac ha sido la marca de uno de los medicamentos más populares para tratar la acidez e indigestión.  Funciona disminuyendo los niveles de ácido estomacal con bloqueadores de histamina-2.  El medicamento antiácido se puede encontrar fácilmente sin receta, pero también es recetado por los médicos para tratar afecciones estomacales más graves que producen ácido y úlceras.  Todos los años se compraban millones en las tiendas y se prescribían como tratamiento seguro para el ardor de estómago, las úlceras gástricas y duodenales, enfermedad por reflujo gastroesofágico (ERGE), acidez estomacal, el esófago de Barrett, el reflujo ácido y otros problemas.

El nombre genérico de Zantac, y su principio activo, es una sustancia llamada ranitidina.  Recientemente, la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de Estados Unidos (FDA) ha reconocido que los medicamentos que contienen ranitidina contienen niveles alarmantes de una sustancia cancerígena llamada N-Nitrosodimetilamina (NDMA).

La NDMA ha sido una notoria preocupación para la salud, desde hace décadas, ya que la exposición aumenta los riesgos de ciertos cánceres y otros daños internos en los seres humanos.  Aunque es habitual ingerir en niveles bajos que están presentes de forma natural en los alimentos o el agua, pueden surgir complicaciones y riesgos por una exposición prolongada a mayores niveles.  Los niveles de NDMA encontrados en Zantac pueden ser de 3.000 a 26.000 veces superiores a los legalmente permitidos por la FDA.

ADVERTENCIAS DE LA FDA SOBRE ZANTAC Y RETIRADA DEL FÁRMACO RANITIDINA

En abril de 2020, la FDA solicitó la retirada inmediata del fármaco del mercado y que los pacientes dejaran de tomarlo por completo. Los fabricantes debían retirar todos los productos de ranitidina y los minoristas retirarlo de las estanterías.

El comunicado de prensa de la FDA también afirmaba que cuanto más tiempo se almacena la ranitidina, más altos son los niveles de NDMA que se pueden encontrar.   Esencialmente, el envejecimiento del fármaco puede hacerlo más tóxico.

LOS FABRICANTES DE ZANTAC NO NOTIFICARON A LOS PACIENTES SOBRE LOS RIESGOS DE CÁNCER
